Ricardo Carvalho plays down Conte's influence on Chelsea this season

Former Chelsea defender, Ricardo Carvalho has refused to accept that Chelsea’s revival this season is all down to the new manager, Antonio Conte who came in after a very bad season under Jose Mourinho who incidentally was Ricardo Carvalho's mentor and coached him at three different clubs, FC Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Carvalho can only give Conte little credit for his achievement so far this season. Speaking to Omnisport, the Shanghai SIPG defender said: "The truth is that Chelsea have great players too. They were champions with Mourinho. The next year things did not go well, but the players are there. The players who have been champions, most are there. "And so, of course, Conte has merit too because he changed the team's strategy a bit, but most of the players who were champions with Mourinho were there. "So quality and talent were there. And this [season], fortunately, they are playing well and will manage to win again, at least they are well on the way"

Carvalho believes that last season was strange and the players are now showing their worth
"Yes, they are special players. You saw that in the first year with Mourinho," he added. "The next year I do not know what happened. There are things that happen in isolation. "But the truth is that quality is something that when we see them play, we see what makes the difference and gradually we see that they are special."They make the difference and they are important players. And it's important to care much about them because they are players that make a difference"

Chelsea agree fee with Atletico Madrid for Costa

Chelsea Football Club this afternoon announced that they have agreed a deal with Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid subject to the agreement of personal terms and a medical. Chelsea bought Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid for £32m and it's believed that Costa will cost his former club £18m more than they sold him three years ago. A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea Football Club has today agreed terms with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa. "The transfer will be subject to the agreement of personal terms and a medical." Atletico said: "Atletico de Madrid and Chelsea have reached an initial agreement for the transfer of Diego Costa.
