Sampaoli: I am proud that Chelsea wanted me
It's no longer news that Chelsea considered Seville manager, Jorge Sampaoli to replace Jose Mourinho last summer but finally settled for Antonio Conte and Sampaoli went To Sevilla instead.
According to the Argentine, it was his lack of command of English language that made it impossible for him to be chosen as the next Chelsea boss but he has only kind words and respect for Chelsea and the owner Roman Abramovich.
He said: "It filled me with joy that Chelsea thought I could be the man to lead them this season — which actually has turned out to be so successful. It was a huge compliment and I felt proud that someone as important as Mr Abramovich wanted to know my idea about football and what I felt and thought about his own team.
“There were different reasons why it did not happen but just the fact he listened to me for so many hours meant a lot to me.
“In the end they opted for another successful coach.
“But I was grateful for their good intentions and the attention they had paid to my teams and my philosophy of the game and that they considered me.”
Arsenal could be looking for a possible replacement for rattled Arsene Wenger and the Chilean could be a big chance for them to get another top coach with similar philosophy at the Emirates as Sampaoli still dreams of coaching in the English Premier League.
He said: “I hope I get the chance to bring my experience and my ideas to England where some of the best coaches have already brought their own philosophy. I want to compete with them.”
